CPS Energy imposter tries to gain home access

SAN ANTONIO -

Chris Hensley, who owns a home on the city’s North Side, got a call Monday from someone claiming to be with CPS Energy.

“They asked me if had the CPS Home Manager system and asked me if I would be willing to have someone come to my home to evaluate it,” said Hensley.

Hensley does, in fact, have the Home Manager that lets him monitor his energy use from his home computer. When Hensley told the caller he already had the system, they immediately hung up. That's when he knew something wasn’t right.

“I did a reverse look up on white pages,” Hensley said, “and the number appeared to be a residence on the near Westside."

So Hensley contacted KSAT 12, which reached out to CPS. The company says, unfortunately, this is a type of scam they’ve seen before.

CPS says it is important for customers to know that they will not be contacted over the phone, even for late payment.

“We never call people to solicit services, especially in reference to the Home Manager system," said Christine Patmon, spokesperson for CPS.

On Wednesday, CPS launches its “Most Wanted” Campaign to raise awareness of scammers, who tend to target more people around the holidays.

"What if some unwitting old lady answers the phone and says ‘yes, I want the home manager system’ and she opens the door to these guys?” said Hensley. “What are they going to do?"

Hensley contacted San Antonio Police as well and has an open case regarding the call.
