SAN ANTONIO -

A homeowner critically wounded a burglar following a physical confrontation at a home Friday in southeast Bexar County, sheriff's officials said.

A deputy at the scene said that the homeowner saw the backdoor open to his home in the 6000 block of Dan Road at 11:50 a.m. and went to investigate.

The homeowner confronted the 34-year-old burglar and then got into a fight with him, sheriff's officials said.

The burglar ran outside the home, where he was shot once in the leg by the homeowner, sheriff's officials said.

The burglar then sped away in his car, but only drove about half a mile down Highway 181 South, where he pulled over until an ambulance transported him to San Antonio Military Medical Center in critical condition.

The homeowner was taken in for questioning.
