Convention workers and their supporters converged at a rally on the steps of City Hall Thursday to push for what's known as a Tip Integrity Act.
Organizers said contrary to popular belief, most hospitality workers in San Antonio do not get their portion of what is called a service charge or fee.
"Service charge used to mean tip," said Tom Johnson, who works at a major downtown hotel.
Johnson said it has become part of the hotel's revenue stream.
"The service charge that customers or event planners are being billed, we get none of that," Johnson said.
Later, those at the rally entered City Hall to deliver a letter to Mayor Julian Castro's office.
Signed by dozens of workers and community leaders, the letter said they want what they said is a similar practice at the Convention Center to stop immediately.
Organizers of the TIA movement said they are urging city council members and candidates to supporter an ordinance giving hospitality workers the tips they deserve.
Management at the Grand Hyatt have said its 22 per cent service charge helps offset wages and benefits, as well as additional costs of staging large events.
