Fellow housekeepers and other concerned citizens attend a memorial service for Gloria Rodriguez, the Crockett hotel housekeeper who died Dec. 28 after falling six floors down an open elevator shaft.
A group of hotel housekeepers and other concerned citizens held a brief ceremony Tuesday afternoon outside the Crockett Hotel in memory Gloria Rodriguez, a Crockett employee who died December 28 after falling to her death after an elevator opened up on the 6th floor without the car. The ceremony began with a prayer by the pastor of Rodriguez's son's church although none of her family attended the event. Following the accident, Rodriguez's daughter said the elevator had recently had problems and it had missed an annual inspection.
At Tuesday's ceremony two area hotel housekeepers spoke of the safety concerns they deal with, one citing an incident where an elevator dropped with guests inside.
"What happened to Ms. Rodriguez is a tragedy that shouldn't happen to anyone," said Elvia Claudio, one of the housekeepers. "It is a reminder of the dangers we face daily in the hotel industry. Hopefully if we continue to speak about these problems, together we can make our workplaces safer."
Following the speeches, those in attendance laid flowers at the plaza in front of the hotel in Rodriguez's memory. The group is calling for local hotel workers to report any safety concerns to management and asking for management to look into all concerns.
