Hundreds attend vigil for East Central grad killed in car crash

Nearly 600 friends and former classmates turned out Monday night for a vigil for 2011 East Central graduate Moses Rymers who died in a car accident on Dec. 13.

"It's proof that Moses was an amazing individual," said Natalie Earthman a 2011 graduate who helped organize the vigil.  "Moses was, he was everywhere.  Choir, ROTC, football, basketball.  Everyone knew Moses.  If you didn't, you were hiding under a rock."

Many friends and family addressed the crowd at Hornet Stadium which was in near darkness aside from the hundreds of candles lit in Rymers' memory. 

"He was a good guy, open heart," said friend and neighbor C.J. Sanchez who had a tattoo on his right shoulder in memory of his friend.  "If I ever needed anybody he was there."

Moses was a passenger in a car that went off the road and crashed into a tree on I-37 in Atascosa late Thursday night. Rymers was not wearing a seat belt.

Through donations at the vigil and online giving at http://www.giveforward.com/foreverahornet, friends raised nearly $1,500 for funeral costs by Monday night and expected that number to rise.  The family will hold a viewing at Porter Loring Mortuary on McCullough on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. with a funeral service at 7 p.m. at the chapel.
