SAN ANTONIO -

On Thursday, the Alamo Regional Mobility Authority opened the first portion of the Highway 281/Loop 1604 construction project.

The two on ramps opened on Thursday will take motorists from Highway 281 North to either Loop 1604 East or West.

For Nellie Pantanini, living and working on the north side of San Antonio for the last several months has been interesting.

"You definitely find the back roads and alternate routes and sometimes you have to go through these corridors," Pantanini said.

Like many, she's ready for a construction-free commute.

"When this is your center of your lifeline, it's definitely super exciting as a resident," Pantanini said.

But for business owners, it's a lot more than just an inconvenience.

"Due to construction, our business has been off 30 to 35 percent," Don Haynes, general manager for Alamo Toyota, said.

The second set of ramps are projected to be complete by February and the entire project will be finished by May.

It's the beginning of the end of all that construction at Highway 281 and Loop 1604.
