Information fair held for furloughed Scooter Store employees
Friday, March 15, marked one week since that massive furloughs at the Scooter Store in New Braunfels was announced.
Its impact on the company's employees was apparent during an employee's information fair held on Friday.
The turnout set new records for Workforce Solutions Alamo, who hosted the fair, at the New Braunfels Civic Center.
The bulk of the store's workforce was placed a week ago
That stepped the rapid response information fair in motion.
"This is the largest (turnout) I've seen," said Bar Betta Womack, with Workforce Solutions Alamo. "There's usually companies that may have 500 people, but this is a little bit larger than what I've normally seen."
The Workforce Solutions staff briefed the workers -- 171 just in the morning session -- on what help is available.
"They can come in and use our computers, fax machines, our copiers and our resource room," Womack said.
The city of New Braunfels, itself, also has a stake in this.
"We obviously want to make sure that all of them have an opportunity to be able to go back to work," said Rusty Brockman, with the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce.
Though not all the Scooter Store employees live in the city, the amount of 1,200 jobs will be filled, he said.
"It does impact our economy to a certain extent," Brockman said. "But it impacts their lives and their families more than (just) the New Braunfels' economy. We want to make sure that's taken care of."
To that end, there are two more employment information fairs scheduled for Monday.
