SAN ANTONIO -

A San Antonio police officer who suffered serious injuries after being hit by a vehicle on the job over the weekend is recovering from surgery Tuesday evening.

A spokesman for the San Antonio Police Department said Officer Jonathan Esquivel responded well to a 10-hour surgery Tuesday. He remains in critical but stable condition at University Hospital. Esquivel is expected to undergo more surgery later this week or next week.

Esquivel was hit by a truck while working a traffic accident Sunday night at Loop 410 near Evers road.

A police spokesperson said the driver who hit Esquivel will not be charged and that driver inattention caused the accident.
