Nearly four months after a bankruptcy filing by Ballenger Construction halted expansion work on the Interstate 10 corridor between Loop 1604 and Huebner, a new company is ready to pick up where Ballenger left off.
Webber, a Houston construction company, was selected as the replacement by Ballenger’s bond company.
“Over the course of this week, you’re really going see folks out there cleaning up the job site, picking up stuff, moving stuff around and rearranging a little bit and getting a feel for the project site as it is, said Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Josh Donat. “Then, next week, you’ll start to see some actual action, dirt being moved and so forth.”
The 30-month project began in January 2012 and Donat said TxDOT and Webber are working to stick to see if it’s possible to stick to the original timeline.
“Looking at several different ideas, thinking outside the box a little bit to find ways that we can hustle this project along to get it finished as close to that Summer 2014 date that we can,” he said.
The nearly four-mile-long project will add a lane on both sides of the highway as well as a turnaround west of UTSA Boulevard.
It will also remove an on-ramp and an off-ramp between Huebner and DeZavala.
There are currently two of each and Donat said the removals will improve traffic flow.
Ballenger Construction informed TxDOT last November that they were going to declare bankruptcy leaving this and two other TxDOT projects in limbo.
The other two projects, sections of Wurzbach Parkway, were given to another construction company and Donat said those projects will pick back up in April.
