SAN ANTONIO -

Iowa residents Jim and Hettie Maschmann won’t soon forget their trip to San Antonio, and for all the wrong reasons.

While they were visiting last month, someone stole their prized pet, a 4-year-old black and white Shi-Poo named KatieJo.

San Antonio police issued an alert Wednesday, asking the public for information about the poached pooch.

According a police report, someone took the dog from the Maschmann’s pickup while they were visiting San Antonio Feb. 7.

The couple was returning from a day trip to Corpus Christi and had stopped off for a bite to eat at a Cracker Barrel restaurant in the 3200 block of SE Military.

"We left the vehicle probably for about 35 minutes in the parking lot,” Jim Maschmann said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “We came back out and our pickup had been gotten into."

Maschmann had left the truck’s window cracked open to allow the dog to have fresh air, the police report said.

Someone took the pet along with other personal items, including a cell phone equipped with GPS, which has since been deactivated.

Surveillance video from the parking lot captured a white pickup with a moon roof (see below) driving by the area around that time.

Police believe it is the suspect’s vehicle and released clips of that video to the media.

In addition to contacting police about the theft, Maschmann has placed an ad about his stolen dog on the internet website Craigslist.

He said although that has yielded an offer from someone who wants to help locate the animal, he hasn’t had any leads yet.

"I said to my wife the other day, I said, 'It's just like we're missing a hand,'” Maschmann said. “KatieJo is just so much of our lives that we miss her a lot. ... I mean, she's just a little sweetheart. It's left a real empty spot in our hearts."

Police ask anyone who may know the dog’s whereabouts, or recognize the suspect’s vehicle, to call their South Property Crimes Division at 210-207-7334.
