A couple visiting from Iowa is happy to be reunited with their dog more than five weeks after she was stolen from them.
Jim Maschmann and his wife, Hettie, passed through San Antonio on Feb. 7.
They stopped for dinner at a Cracker Barrel restaurant on Southeast Military and left their dog, Katie Jo, in their pickup.
When they returned 35 minutes later, the truck had been broken into and Katie Jo was missing.
"We couldn't believe she was gone," said Jim Maschmann. "She's like family."
Heartbroken, the family offered a $1,000 reward for the return of their precious pooch.
They stayed in town for weeks hoping to find her, but finally went back to Iowa.
They recently decided to return to San Antonio to meet with the detective on the case.
On Sunday, they were contacted by someone who'd seen a news report on the missing dog and said they'd found her.
They met the caller, and traded the reward money for Katie Jo.
"She looked at me and you could almost see her smile," said Maschmann. "She just started licking me on the face and it was non-stop for while."
Maschmann was told Katie Jo was found wandering a trailer park not far from where she went missing.
"They said she had been walking in the area for three days and they decided to check on her," he said. "She was filthy and dehydrated."
Maschmann said the dog had put on a few pounds and seemed a bit traumatized but looked better than he expected.
The family plans to head back to Iowa soon and said this time they won't let Katie Jo out of their sight.
"It's going to be drive-up McDonald's from now on," said Maschmann. "She's not going to be left in a vehicle."
