SAN ANTONIO -

A jury decided Monday that a 34-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison for the slaying of his ex-girlfriend's mother and sister in 2009.

Since the trial involved a capital murder case, jurors could have sentenced James Morrison to death by lethal injection.

According to trial testimony, the shooting in a parking lot in 2009 left the defendant's pregnant ex-girlfriend, Candice Moten, wounded. The shooting, which was triggered by an argument, caused the miscarriage of Morrison and Moten's child.

Morrison claimed during the trial that the women were attacking him and that he fired in self-defense.
