Job listing hints Trader Joe's coming to SA
California grocer expanding in Texas
A job posting on Trader Joe's website provides a hint that the grocer may be opening one of its eclectic stores here soon.
Repeated calls to the California-based retailer were not returned.
The listing is for store management in San Antonio, with compensation listed between $40,000 and $70,000 depending on experience and qualifications.
For local shoppers, it's another option along with Whole Foods, Sprouts and the dominant grocer HEB.
"I would go to it, absolutely," said Peggy Karam, who said she prefers organic and healthier food choices.
Trader Joe's carries organic foods, specialty and hard-to-find foods, it's own popular private label, imported beer and wine as well as basics.
The upscale grocer is just beginning to expand into Texas, with stores opening this spring in Dallas, Fort Worth and the Woodlands.
Local shoppers were intrigued by the possibility, but said location would be a major factor for shopping there.
A vacant storefront at the Quarry Village has been rumored for months as a possible location. However, Don Thomas, principal for Reata Real Estate, the brokerage and leasing company for the property, said nothing had been signed.
Trader Joe's has 365 stores in 31 states. It's a big $8.5 billion dollar a year business, but with a small, neighborhood store feel. According to the retailer's website, the dress code for store employees is a Hawaiian-style shirt.
