Judson ISD conducts truancy round-up
Students picked up from six schools; District hopes to resolve truancy cases
For many it was an unsettling sight: Students escorted from school in handcuffs on their way to an appearance before a judge.
All students picked up during Judson Independent School District's truancy round-up had outstanding subpoenas issued after they and their parents failed to respond to district efforts to address the student’s truancy problems.
“If we get these students back in class, first of all, then hopefully we can get them motivated,” said Judson ISD spokesman Steve Linscomb.
Precinct 4 Judge Rogelio Lopez said truancy is a serious problem.
“Truancy has been linked as a predecessor to juvenile delinquency and, of course, ultimately to future crime,” Lopez said.
Lopez, the students and their parents will discuss options for getting the students back in school and on track.
