The Junior Market Steer Show is one of the most popular competitions at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.

This year was no exception, as stands filled with on-lookers and anxious parents for the second day of the three-day event.

"You want them to be a sound calf, have a lot of top shape, a lot of muscle,” said participant Blayze Biershwale, of Lampasas, describing what the judges might be looking for.

The competition is fierce, as 1,500 steers of different breeds and categories compete for top prize. For the contestants, it takes a year’s worth of daily prep work.

“You have to give it a bath, you have to blow it dry, you have to brush it and you have to feed it,” said contestant Quensey Torrez.

Contestants ranged in age from junior high to high school.

Davis Reeh, 10, of Fredericksburg, while young, had no shortage of experience.

"I’ve been showing since I was 7," said Reeh.

Should a contestant’s steer do well in the competition, their steer is poised to make large amounts of money at the Junior Market Steer Auction. That money comes in the form of as scholarship.

"It helps support these young people for their future endeavors, primarily college scholarships,” said David Greiner, a judge.

Scholarships received can often reach into the tens of thousands of dollars, making the competition important to the participants.

"I want to go to Texas A&M University," said participant Tyler Lettunich, of DeLeon.

A Grand Steer Champion will be determined Friday night at the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo.
