KSAT holds its second-annual School Expo at North Star Mall on Saturday.
Schools and colleges from all over South Texas will be on hand to discuss with students and their families the opportunities available to them when it comes to their education.
One of the schools that will be featured will be the School of Excellence in Education, a charter school that was founded in 1998. One of the campuses the school is quite proud of is Dr. Harmon W. Kelley Elementary School.
Kelley Elementary is a school that likes to do things a little bit differently.
"We do a lot of things outside of the box. Where normally some schools have maybe one or two field trips a year, we try to do a lot of hands-on. So we have a field trip almost every month," said Alma Ruth Garza, principal at Kelley Elementary.
For students that are struggling, tutoring is made a priority.
"As soon as a folder comes to us from a student and we see that a student is struggling a little bit in reading or spelling, we start tutoring immediately," Garza said.
The school also emphasizes the arts -- so much so that it recently received a grant from a major corporation to help continue its work in everything from dance to fine art.
In addition to academics and the arts, this school prides itself on taking care of disciplinary issues before they get out of control.
"If a teacher cannot teach the lesson because there's a disruption, then we have immediate parent meeting, " said Garza.
