Fat Monday celebrations were extra special for a Hurricane Katrina evacuee.
Restaurateur Bernard McGraw celebrated with the grand opening of his new restaurant location at Stinson Municipal Airport.
Bernard's Creole Kitchen first opened in 2006 as a hole in the wall on the city's South side. McGraw had moved to San Antonio a year earlier as a Hurricane Katrina evacuee.
At the time, he was trying to rebuild his life and was missing the taste of New Orleans cuisine.
"I loved San Antonio. We were willing to make it our home but we had to do something about the void of Creole food," said McGraw.
McGraw had very little restaurant experience but took a chance on opening a restaurant.
"I've worked in the restaurant business but never cooked professionally, never had my own restaurant. I didn't realize that I was even capable of doing this," said McGraw.
He now has about seven years of success under his belt and a growing customer base.
"To come from the ashes of Katrina to where we are now, it's been a tremendous journey," said McGraw.
While the new location is a big step up, McGraw doesn't want to stop at this point.
He hopes to bring his Creole flavor to even more locations in the future.
