Keeping kids safe during Fiesta
Police: Parents need to stay vigilant watching kids at Fiesta events
San Antonio kids get introduced to the sights and sounds of Fiesta at an early age -- and all those distractions could cause them to wander off if parents aren't careful.
That was the message from the San Antonio Police Department Tuesday, as they reminded parents that Fiesta events are prime spots for children to get lost.
"There's just so many things going on at these events that if you take your eyes off them for one second, they could be gone," said San Antonio police Sgt. Javier Salazar.
He said kidnappings can also be a threat, although nearly all of the incidents they see involving lost children mostly involve them wandering off on their own.
"We actually have one of those kid leashes," said David Richards, who has a 3-year-old and a 1-year old. "We just have to never take our eyes off of them."
Police encouraged parents to take a photo of their children right after they leave the house, so if they do get lost, police have an accurate description and a photo to spread around.
"As soon as we get word, all of our officers drop everything to look for these kids, so any extra information like a good description can really make a difference," said Salazar.
