Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin has announced Kerrville Tivy product Johnny Manziel will start for the Aggies in their season opener against Louisiana Tech.
Manziel, a redshirt freshman, beat out sophomores Jamiell Showers and Matt Joeckel, and true freshman Matt Davis.
Manziel takes over for Ryan Tannehill, who was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft in April.
The Aggies open the season against the Bulldogs on Aug. 30 at Kyle Field. Texas A&M's first home game in the SEC is Sept. 8 against the Florida Gators.
Manziel threw for over 3,600 yards and rushed for over 1,600 during his senior year at Tivy.
