Lackland opens doors to Congress amid sex scandal
House Armed Services members tour Lackland following sex scandal at Texas Air Force base
Members of the House Armed Services committee are touring Lackland Air Force Base in the wake of a sex scandal that led to criminal charges against six instructors.
The congressional delegation is meeting with commanders at the Air Force's basic training headquarters to find out how an environment was able to develop where more than 40 female trainees say they had inappropriate relationships with instructors, or were sexually harassed or raped.
Five instructors have been convicted and nearly a dozen more are under investigation. Last month, the Air Force put a female commander over the training wing where about 36,000 airmen graduate each year.
Democratic congresswomen Jackie Speier, Susan Davis and Loretta Sanchez are visiting the Texas base Tuesday. The Republican chairman of the House committee visited Lackland last month.
