LAREDO, Texas -

A Laredo man is hospitalized after police say his 3-year-old grandson shot him in the base of the back.

Laredo fire Capt. Eloy Vega tells the Laredo Morning Times that the 47-year-old man was in stable condition at Laredo Medical Center after the 2:40 p.m. Tuesday shooting at the man's home. Laredo police spokesman Joe Baeza says described the injury as a non-life-threatening flesh wound.

Baeza says the child apparently found a small-caliber handgun under a pillow or a mattress. He said suspicion turned toward the child after he complained of wrist pain and having scorch marks on his hands.

Baeza said Wednesday that the case is being referred to the Webb County District Attorney's Office. He said Child Protective Services also is investigating.
