Leakey church sign stirs political controversy
Sign in front of Church In The Valley encourages people to ‘Vote for the Mormon, not the Muslim’
A non-denominational church in Leakey, Texas, is raising some eyebrows for it's politically charged message.
The marquee sign in front of Church In The Valley reads, "Vote for the Mormon, not the Muslim! The capitalist, not the communist!" President Barack Obama is not a Muslim.
Members of the congregation gathered for worship services Wednesday evening but said Ray Miller, the pastor of the church, was out of town on a fishing trip and unavailable to comment about the message on the sign.
A KSAT 12 News viewer said the church frequently posts provocative messages on the sign. The viewer sent two more images of the sign. One read, "Claim crack heads, welfare cases, illegal immigrants and Congress as dependents on your tax form."
Another message is more traditional. "We will turn back the powers of darkness in this country in the name of the Lord Jesus?" the sign said.
Several church members said they make no apology for the current sign or any of the other messages posted by the pastor. One member said the church is a "right wing, very conservative" congregation that says what it believes and stands up for its beliefs. The church member said they get more positive comments than negative about the messages.
