Cowboys on horseback drove a herd of longhorn cattle through downtown as the rodeo celebrations began Saturday in San Antonio.
The Western Heritage Parade and Cattle Drive is the official start of the rodeo events, though the real rodeo begins on Feb. 7.
The longhorn cattle are a throwback to the times when real cowboys drove real herds through the streets on their way to market.
Saturday's parade also included elected officials in wagons and marching musicians, but it was the longhorns that attracted most of the attention.
Cowboys started the mini cattle drive on Houston St. by Santa Rosa.
They herded the longhorns down Houston toward the Alamo.
The longhorn drive has become a regular rodeo event.
The Stock Show and Rodeo runs through Feb. 24 at the AT&T Center and on the grounds of Freeman Coliseum.
