Major closure on 1604 set for Sat. & Sun.
Westbound lanes from Redland to 281 to be shut down
The Alamo Regional Mobility Authority is alerting drivers of a major closure of the westbound lanes of Loop 1604 between Redland Rd. and 281, from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Leroy Alloway, Alamo RMA spokesperson, said workers will be putting in concrete barriers and resurfacing the main lanes.
He said drivers should be aware of other possible lane closures in the area, but the biggest slowdown will westbound 1604 traffic being diverted onto the frontage road.
Alloway said he urges the public to check the agency’s website and social media for updates.
“But there is an end in sight,” Alloway said.
He said the opening of the first two of four connector ramps on 281 and 1604 interchange are weeks away from completion.
Alloway said the contractors are working around the clock to finish the massive project by May of next year.
He said they also are putting in sidewalks, vehicle and pedestrian bridges and dark sky lighting to not interfere with training at Camp Bullis.
“We have a couple of more instances of these pressure points where we have to work during the weekend, but that should quickly become a thing of the past,” Alloway said.
“I’ll be able to get to work on time, not have to deal with morning traffic,” said motorist Evan Aguilar. “It’s horrible.”
The traffic slowdowns also have been costly to businesses in the area.
Susan Stoval, owner of Boston’s Restaurant and Sports Bar, said last Sunday’s closure was a preview of what’s to come this weekend.
“I think there was two to-go deliveries, they were coming to pick it up,” Stoval said. “They just said, we can’t get there. Forget it.”
Stoval said football season is supposed to bring in customers, but instead they’re sitting in traffic.
Still she hopes fans will decide it’s worth it.
“Drink our dollar beer and have a good time,” Stoval said.
