Man arrested after stolen car stalls during chase in east San Antonio
San Antonio police: Suspect stole welding equipment, led police on 30-minute chase
A man accused of stealing welding equipment was arrested after the car he was driving, which was reportedly stolen, stalled during a chase with San Antonio police.
Police arrested the suspect in the 4600 block of Dellcrest Drive on the East side after they said he stole the equipment from Weldinghouse in the 1700 block of Southeast Loop 410.
Surveillance video from the store shows a car breaking the front glass, then shows a man walking in and out several times, loading welding equipment into a sedan.
Police responded to a burglary alarm, and then said they caught up to the suspect when he stopped to pick up welding equipment that fell out of the trunk of the car onto the Loop 410 access road.
The man drove the wrong way on the Loop 410 frontage road for about two miles before taking Roland to Interstate 10 then to Martin Luther King Drive, San Antonio police said.
Officers continued to follow the car with the help of their Blue Eagle helicopter down Pecan Valley to Interstate 37 and Southeast Military Drive, then back up W.W. White.
Police said the suspect's car stalled on Rigsby Avenue, a block east of W.W. White.
The suspect fled on foot and hid under a car in front of a house on Dellcrest when San Antonio police officers spotted him.
San Antonio police said the suspect faces several charges.
Investigators are looking into whether the man could be responsible for other recent burglaries of businesses with welding supplies along Loop 410.
