Police arrested a 27-year-old man they believe opened fire on a couple outside a North Side fitness center late Sunday evening.
Officers took Yu Masaki into custody around 5 a.m. Monday at the Woodhollow Apartments in the 10300 Sahara. Masaki was charged with murder, attempted murder and attempted assault on a police officer in the double shooting outside Planet Fitness on Northeast Loop 410 and McCullough.
Police said Juan Escamilla, 31, died at the scene, while Margaret McCombs, 21, was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
Police said the victims worked at the fitness center together. Co-workers told police Masaki was a club member and wanted to date the woman involved, but she had no interest in him.
Police received a tip about Masaki 's whereabouts and found a car at the apartment complex that matched a description of a vehicle seen driving from the parking lot after the shooting.
Police said Masaki was seen loading items into a car and resisted arrest when officers confronted him.
The Planet Fitness was closed Monday morning, much to the surprise of regular gym-goers.
"That's crazy," Nick Kaplan said. "You know, I've come here for almost a year now and I couldn't imagine anything like this happening."
