SAN ANTONIO -

A burglar was caught on a surveillance camera ransacking the Fort Sam Mart in east San Antonio early Monday morning.

Store owner Tiger Mashal said the burglary happened right after the store closed. The bad guy broke in through the attic and stole over $80,000 worth of merchandise, and about $3,500 of cash from the register.

“We looked and the cash register everything was open the cigarette display it’s all empty and we look everything was on the floor, then we went back to the area of the gift shop and it was completely empty,” said Mashal.

Fort Sam Mart is located on Mason Street and just opened a month ago. He thought the store was well equipped, with nine cameras and a security system.

Mashal believes before the burglar broke in, he cut the wires to the security system, then one by one, disabled each security camera. In total, he said the burglar spent two and a half hours in the store and walked away with thousands of dollars’ worth of jewelry, clothing, hookah pipes, and cigarettes.

Mashal also owns another convenience store on the South Side. He said he just wanted to provide a similar store to the east side community, so residents wouldn’t have to go too far.

Now, he’s convinced his motive just encouraged a bad guy in the area to burglarize a place he worked so hard for.

“They don’t realize we work hard day and night to make our money,” said Mashal.

Even though the surveillance tape just shows one person, Mashal is convinced he didn’t work alone since practically everything in his store was stolen.
