GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A Houston man charged with opening fire outside a Southeast Texas courthouse and killing a bystander has testified he didn't do it.
Bartholomew Granger on Monday denied killing a 79-year-old woman outside the Jefferson County Courthouse in Beaumont.
Granger told jurors in Galveston that his intent was to target his daughter and her mother in retaliation for false testimony against him in a sexual misconduct trial. Granger also says he doesn't remember much about that day in March 2012, that it's like he was on "cruise control" and like he wasn't even there.
His lawyers declined to give an opening statement and immediately put him on the stand as the defense began Monday.
Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.
