Man dies at San Antonio gun range
Police: Victim died of self-inflicted gunshot, unclear if it was accidental or suicide
San Antonio police are investigating a shooting that left a 37-year-old man dead at a local gun range.
The shooting happened around 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at A Place to Shoot located in the 13000 block of Pleasanton Road.
San Antonio pPolice Sgt. George Antu said the victim died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, but it was unclear if the man shot himself on purpose or if it was an accident.
"We don't know if he was clearing a jammed weapon, if he was trying to clean the weapon, or we don't know if he actually pointed the gun at himself and pulled the trigger," Antu said.
According to Antu, the man rented a gun and a stall on the range.
Witnesses saw the victim firing down-range just before he shot himself.
None of the witnesses on the range actually saw the shooting take place but some of them saw the man fall to the ground.
It's unknown how long the man was at the range before the incident happened.
Antu said at least one of the witnesses tried to help save the man's life.
"We had a paramedic at the scene who was also shooting who started CPR and emergency medical treatment on the individual," Antu said. "Fire and EMS made the scene and tried to revive the victim but unfortunately the gentleman did pass."
Investigators located the man's car in the parking lot but they had not located the keys to open up it. They want to search the vehicle to see if there was a note or any other evidence that the man may have wanted to kill himself, but as of Wednesday afternoon, they hadn't found any evidence like that.
The body was taken to the Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office where an autopsy will be performed to determine if the shooting was intentional or accidental.
