Man found dead in Atascosa County may be victim of gang hit
Passerby found victim on Gates Valley Road near Highway 16
A man found dead on Gates Valley Road near Highway 16, north of Poteet, may have been the victim of a “gang-type hit,” according to investigators with the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office.
“I can't go into any details as to why we theorized that right now. I don't want to compromise the investigation," said Chief Deputy David Soward. “But it is a homicide.”
Soward said a passerby discovered the man, who appeared to be in his 30s, along a remote stretch of Gates Valley Road, shortly before 1:00 a.m. Thursday. He said the victim had been shot in the head.
“He was shot at least once, probably at the location,” Soward said. “It has all the markings of a gang style type hit.”
Although investigators are not elaborating on some details of the case, they did say the dead man had several gang-related tattoos.
Soward said the victim did not have any identification on him. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s office is handling the autopsy and working to figure out who he was.
Detectives are hoping anyone who noticed unusual activity in that area will contact them.
Soward also encourages anyone who suspects they may know who the dead man is to call the Atascosa County Sheriff’s Office’s criminal investigations division at 830-769-3434.
