It was something straight out of a horror movie. A man in costume with a machete went on a rampage right behind a north Houston strip center under construction.
The crime occurred on Crosstimbers at Jensen early Thursday.
The two homeless men who were attacked never saw it coming because they were sound asleep. Based on their statements to police, a source told KPRC-TV the attacker looked similar to a machete-wielding maniac featured in a series of popular classic horror movies.
A neighbor who saw police and the two men after the attack had no idea the situation was so serious.
"Nobody picks on them but I didn't know what they were doing," he said.
The attack was so brutal and so disturbing, both men suffered severe cuts.
A source told KPRC one of the victims may have lost some fingers. In fact, he described the gory scene as a slaughterhouse.
Virtually everything the two men had with them at their makeshift homeless camp had blood on it.
C.J. Gary was riding his bicycle in the neighborhood and noticed the trail of blood on the sidewalk.
"It's kind of messed up. There are some of them behind that building over there sleeping on the side sometimes, you know," Gary said.
The two men never got a look at the suspect's face because of the mask, but police believe he's about 6 feet tall and weights around 200 pounds.
The attacker remains on the loose. The investigation will be handled by HPD's major assault unit.
Both victims are expected to survive.
