Neighbors: Standoff suspect had mental, health issues

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas -

Authorities said SWAT officers shot a man who was seen carrying a gold-plated, double-barrel shotgun near Leon Springs after he opened fire on them.

A county law enforcement source say the 53-year-old man, who was wearing camouflage clothing, was seen carrying the rifle around 11:30 a.m. Thursday near the 24700 block of Scenic Loop Road.

Responding officers tried to talk to the man but Bexar County sheriff's deputies said he retreated into his home.

Negotiators tried to talk the man out, however he would not cooperate. A SWAT team surrounded the man's house when it would not answer the negotiator's calls.

Instead, he came out of the house and fired into the air and at the ground, then pointed his rifle at the SWAT team, who returned fire, hitting the man once in the stomach.

The source said the man was taken by medical helicopter to University Hospital with unknown injuries.

Police on the scene said the man was "alert and talking" as he was taken to the hospital.

The source said he has a history of mental health issues, including paranoia and schizophrenia.

Neighbors said he could often be seen walking down the middle of the street, charging at cars and decapitating road kill.

Authorities said police were called to the man's house two days ago for a report of domestic disturbance, but that the man hadn't broken any laws.

He had boarded himself up in his sister’s house, and according to a family attorney, was destroying the inside.

The man had allegedly stopped taking his medication after the recent death of a relative.

Deputies also said he was recently released from jail.

If he survives, the man will likely be charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
