A man opened fire on a group of suspected burglars that were stealing tools from his neighbor's garage in the 1600 block of West Olmos, police said.
George De La Rosa told police that he heard several doors slamming outside around 2 a.m.
When De La Rosa looked out the window, he saw people walking up and down his neighbor's driveway, so he decided to go outside. De La Rosa asked one of the men what he was doing, and the man told him to go back inside.
"He was pointing something at me. I couldn't see what it was, but to me, it was threatening to me, so I ended up having to defend myself," De La Rosa said.
De La Rosa pulled out a gun, shot at the suspects, hitting one of them in the leg.
All but one of the suspects fled in the car. One of them was left behind.
"He just placed the items he was stealing down across the street and took off," De La Rosa said.
Police said the suspects ditched their car at the intersection of Fredericksburg and West Laurel, then went to Jackson and West Poplar, where an ambulance picked up the man who had been shot. He was listed in stable condition at a local hospital.
Police found the other suspects at Fredericksburg and West Laurel and took them into custody.
De La Rosa is not expected to be charged, police said.
The suspects are expected be charged with burglary.
