PLANO, Texas (AP) — A federal magistrate has denied bond to a man accused of trying to blow up a natural gas pipeline in suburban Dallas.

U.S. Magistrate Amos Mazzant decided at a detention hearing Friday in Plano that Anson Chi (CHEE) was a public menace.

FBI agent Brian Carroll testified significant stores of chemicals and lab equipment were found in the Plano home Chi shares with his parents. Carroll also said written details were found there on how to make a bomb, but that Chi's mother told agents she thought her son was making soup and the nitric acid in the freezer was wine.

Federal prosecutors say Chi had a homemade bomb that exploded prematurely at a natural gas regulator June 18 in Plano. The blast caused minimal damage but critically injured Chi.
