A man who the Bexar County Sheriff's Office said fatally shot his ex-wife and her brother and then shot himself during a police standoff has died.
The man, identified as William McKendrick, 47, died early Thursday morning at University Hospital, sheriff's officials said.
McKendrick died several hours after he went to a mobile home in the 14500 Block of Wisdom Road outside of Lacoste to pick up his 7-year-old son and got into an argument with his ex-wife in the front yard, said Sgt. Raymond Pollard of the Bexar County Sheriff's Office. The woman, identified as Sonia McKendrick, 43, ran inside the home screaming, "He has a gun!"
Seconds later, William McKendrick burst through the front door and opened fire on his ex, Pollard said. Sonia McKendrick was hit several times and later died inside the home.
As William McKendrick was firing at his ex, a family member identified by Pollard as the woman's 57-year-old brother, tried to stop the shooter and was shot several times in the process. The man, identified as Milton Lozano, also died inside the home.
Pollard said several family members, including the divorced couple's 7-year-old son, were inside the home and witnessed the shooting. None of them were injured and the child was in custody of family members.
Investigators said after the shooting, William McKendrick fled to his apartment on Broadway Avenue, where he was involved in a standoff with police and shot himself.
Pollard said there is a documented record of altercations between the divorced couple, including several incidents occurring at the home where the shooting took place.
Family members on Thursday were in shock over the incident.
"We are angry. There was no reason for it to happen," said Tammy Chatys, a niece of Sonia McKendrick and Lozano.
"We are really just trying to stay strong for each other. This has been a big loss to our family."
