More than a 100 firefighters battled a two-alarm blaze that broke out at a vacant downtown building and prompted a hotel evacuation Wednesday evening.

Fire crews responded to the massive fire just after 7 p.m. at the two-story building in the 200 block of Broadway.

Sky12 helicopter footage over the scene of the fire showed thick white smoke over the building. Fire officials said flames could be seen for miles.

Guests at the Travelers Hotel next door were evacuated as a precaution and traffic on Broadway near the 4th Street intersection was shut down in both directions.

San Antonio fire officials said the flames were so intense and spread so fast, they were never able to enter the building.

Fire crews managed to contain the blaze to the vacant building and extinguish it around 9:30 p.m.

Officials said firefighters would stay overnight to monitor hotspots and begin the cleanup process.

The arson unit was called to investigate a cause, and building was believed to have been destroyed, San Antonio fire officials said.

KSAT was told the building was once a hotel, but in recent years had been vacant and the owner had plans to remodel it. No injuries were reported as of 10 p.m. Wednesday.
