Men beaten with landscaping shears at home on South Calaveras Street
2 suspects arrested, charged with burglary with intent to commit assault
A group of burglars broke into a home in the 500 block of South Calaveras Street and beat two men with gardening sheers, San Antonio police said.
"They just came in and got me good," said Ralph Martinez, one of the victims. "They threw me. They were choking me, but I fought back."
Martinez suffered a busted eye that was swollen shut as well as cuts and bruises on his arms and legs.
Martinez said that he and his friend, Juan Garza, were watching a movie when the group of burglars cut through a screen door of the garage apartment at 2 a.m.
"Just to have kids come over here and attack me like that ... terrible," Martinez said.
Martinez said the burglars hit him with his own landscaping sheers and cut him with a knife or box cutter.
Martinez initially refused treatment, but later went to a hospital.
"They said I'm all right, but still I don't feel all right," he said.
Garza was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover.
Police took three people into custody two blocks from the burglary at the corner of South Calaveras and Monterey.
Christian Elias, 22, and Eduardo Soto, 20, were arrested. The men were charged with burglary with intent to commit assault.
A 16-year-old boy was released.
