Café Punta del Cielo on the River Walk is the first of its kind in the United States, a toe in the water for a company that operates more than 180 cafes in Mexico.
The café, which opened about two weeks ago, reflects a growing trend of Mexican businesses setting up shop in San Antonio, which is considered a gateway to Texas and the rest of the United States.
“Mexican companies want to do a lot of business in Texas,” said Raul Rodriguez, who represents the Free Trade Alliance. “Our city's just a perfect fit for them.”
Rodriguez said he recently returned from at trip to Mexico, where he hosted a seminar about how to do business in San Antonio. Rodriguez said he expected 40 people, but 67 showed up.
Rodriguez said he expects Mexican business interest in San Antonio to continue into the future, with more Mexican chains looking to stake their claims.
