SAN ANTONIO -

It’s often a thankless job, but today, a local businesswoman said thank you to 30 military wives with a day of pampering.

The founder of Designer HomeTending, Cathy Cardenas, put the event together with corporate and private donations.

For Nicole Gallion, the event offered a rare chance to shop.

With her husband in Afghanistan, her day is usually filled with caring for their six children, including 2-year-old quadruplets.

Even on her day out, her thoughts are with her kids as she chooses a dress that’s appropriate for spending time with them.

"I'm thinking past just today to where it's something I can totally chase around my six kids and be comfortable in," Gallion said.

That’s why her husband is thinking about her, even from overseas.

He submitted her name for the makeover.

After shopping, she’ll get her hair and makeup done and go to a nice dinner, where she’ll get an award for her service to her family, and also in a way, her country.

Gallion and most of the ladies at the event said the best thing about it isn’t the clothes and other things they’re getting, it’s what they’re not having to do.

"It means I can breathe and just be an adult, and not have to worry about taking care of others and I can kind of get taken care of myself,” Gallion said.

Laura Carrington, a mother of three, agreed.

"Just to get away for a day by myself, it's been quite a bit, six years or so. It's nice to have a little time to myself," she said.

Carrington said she doesn’t often treat herself to things that many people take for granted, like haircuts.

"We can't afford to do it very often, so it's been about a year now, so it'll be nice to go all out and look nice for once and get the fancy pictures taken," she said.

Carrington said her husband is looking forward to seeing those pictures, because he wants to know that she’s being taken care of while she’s taking care of everyone else.
