Motorist Juan Lopez , 73, gets probation in failure to stop and render aid case

It took the jury just over an hour Thursday to find Juan Lopez, 73, guilty of failure to stop and render aid charges.

After another hour of deliberation the panel assessed punishment at two years probation.

Lopez drove for about three blocks, according to testimony, after he struck and killed Super Abel Herebia, 11, on Sept. 30, 2010.

He told witnesses that he did not realize he’d struck a child.

Oscar Balderas testified that Lopez told him that he thought he had hit a dog.

Following the guilty verdict, the boy’s mother said the accident devastated her.

“My life is not the same anymore,” said Leticia Alcalqa. “Nobody knows the pain I am going through.”
