Murder charge in 2001 South Texas suicide
Murder charge now in 2001 South Texas case originally ruled suicide
CUERO, Texas (AP) — A grand jury has returned a murder indictment against a 41-year-old South Texas man in the fatal shooting of a woman whose death more than a decade ago originally was ruled a suicide.
Ronnie Joe Hendrick, of Yorktown, already was in custody in Cuero for a parole violation when he was charged Wednesday with the 2001 slaying of a former girlfriend, Pamela Shelly.
DeWitt County Sheriff Jode Zavesky tells The Victoria Advocate (http://bit.ly/QKnRg8) an investigator in his department, Sgt. Carl Bowen, has been looking into the case since 2008. Bowen was a patrol deputy in 2001.
Zavesky says information that wasn't known then surfaced this summer and allowed the district attorney to take the case to the grand jury.
Hendrick is now held under $500,000 bond.
