New Braunfels ISD looks to eliminate paper textbooks
Superintendent: Buy all students an iPad
New Braunfels ISD considering iPad textbooks
New Braunfels Independent School District Superintendent Randy Moczygemba is pushing a proposal to buy all 9th graders iPads to replace their paper textbooks.
Moczygemba said the plan would be a pilot program, with hopes that eventually all high school text books would be electronic, with each student being assigned a district iPad to take home and to class.
Moczygemba said electronic textbooks can be as much as $20 cheaper than their paper counterparts, and believes the district's investment will eventually pay for itself.
"Our goal is to get to a point where the amount of costs we eliminate with the use of the iPad actually is equal to or greater than the price of the iPad," said Moczygemba.
Students and their parents would be responsible for any damage to the devices, but would be able to purchase insurance if they want to, Moczygemba said.
Moczygemba said the pilot program would cost about $320,000 dollars, which the district has already set aside for technology upgrades.
Moczygemba will present his proposal to the school board for action at its meeting on February 20th.
