New Braunfels woman's death labeled suspicious
Melissa Eason, 27, found dead in home on E. Merriweather
The death of Melissa Eason, 27, in her New Braunfels home New Year’s Day has been labeled as suspicious by police investigators.
Capt. John McDonald with the New Braunfels Police Department said officers received a phone call around 2 p.m. Tuesday summoning them to the home in the 200 block of E. Merriweather Street.
“For a welfare concern,” McDonald said. “When the officers arrived there, they located a 27-year-old female (who was) deceased."
Police later identified the dead woman as Melissa Eason. Neighbors said she lived in the home with her boyfriend.
McDonald declined to release many details of the case, including who placed the call to 911 dispatchers. He said a lot of the information is part of an ongoing investigation.
However, McDonald did disclose that investigators have ordered an autopsy because they feel the death is “suspicious.”
“Anytime a 27-year-old -- or anybody -- dies that is young in age, we want to look into it and find out what the cause of death was,” McDonald said. “We're backtracking all of those callers and witnesses to try to find out how they gained knowledge of the information."
While detectives continued to comb through Eason’s home Wednesday morning looking for clues about her death, neighbors shed some light on her life.
Several people offered up bits and pieces of information, saying they had noticed past disturbances at Eason’s home where police became involved.
McDonald declined to elaborate on the nature of the previous calls.
“We have dealt with her before on some other things, but right now, all of those things are still involved in the investigation,” he said.
An account on Facebook shows Eason worked at Blake’s Café in McQueeney.
An employee who answered the phone there Wednesday morning said the business was closed New Year’s Day. He said co-workers were shocked and saddened to learn of Eason’s death as they arrived for work Wednesday.
