Homeless Haven

Haven for Hope may be a huge step toward helping the homeless, but a new fact sheet shows who they are and why it's a problem.

SAMMinistries says it might not be who you think.

"In fact, the average age for a homeless child in San Antonio is about 8, according to the survey," said SAMMinistries CEO Navarra Williams. "And the average age for all children, adults that are homeless is about 37."

Here are some of the other new facts released:

55 percent of homeless families in San Antonio are headed by single women

With a total of 524 children left homeless

Average income for these families? $500 dollars

73.9 percent say their greatest need is not a shelter or a handout, but affordable housing.

"They need access to affordable housing," said Willaims. "That is something that I know San Antonio is beginning to work on, but there's still housing where a lot of people can't afford to pay just the regular market price rent."

Williams says without the homelessness prevention funds that helped families in crisis temporarily meet rent and utility costs, the numbers would be much higher.

"We had $2 million of homeless prevention funds, coupled with our own funds, helped us keep about 10,000 people out of homelessness over the last three years, including about 7,000 children," he said.
