New police initiative aims to solve cold cases

SAN ANTONIO -

A new initiative led by the San Antonio Police Department to solve some cold cases was kicked off Monday afternoon.

SAPD, in conjunction with CrimeStoppers and Clear Channel Communications, want to spread the word about nine cases through a media blitz that includes the use of Clear Channel's outdoor, digital billboards.

"Anything that we can do as a company to help get that message out, we're excited to do it," said Luis de la Torre, Clear Channel's vice president of sales.

The new ads will be similar to the DWI fugitive billboard campaign that is already up and running.

The first case of the group is Michael Lazich, who was killed in February of 1988 and his killer never found.

For the next week, anyone with information leading to an arrest in the case could get a $10,000 reward.

"We're hoping that through the community effort, we can pay out a lot of $10,000 rewards," said Scott Guller, president of Crime Stoppers.

Cases like Michael Lazich's and 8 others were chosen, the Police Department said, because of what McManus called high solvability factors.

"We know there are people out there with information that can help us solve these cases," McManus said.

The more awareness in the community, the higher the chances of an arrest, McManus said.

"We're always looking for ways to gain information, and this is one of the ways we came up with," McManus said.

McManus added that previous billboard campaigns have been successful. He hopes the same is true for this campaign.

"These cases have gone unsolved, sometimes for many, many years," McManus said.
