SAN ANTONIO -

Almost nine months to the day that AMC shuttered its 24-screen movie complex at the Huebner Oaks shopping center, Regal Entertainment Group's new Huebner Oaks Stadium 14 has opened its doors with a three-day test run to help local charities.

On Wednesday, KSAT 12 teamed up with Regal to offer $2 movies all day long along with $2 popcorn and soda.

The money raised from those sales went to the Roy Maas Youth Alternatives, which helps serve children who have been physically or sexually abused and abandoned or neglected.

Helping the charity was a reason many came out on Wednesday.

"It feels great," said Dawn Holzer who brought her two daughters to the theater. "I'm always up for helping charities. I have my girls in Big Brothers, Big Sisters, so we do fundraisers with them too so it's a big thing."

"I like the benefit they're having right now," added Bryan Flournoy, who saw "The Smurfs" with his son. "I'm all for it and that's why we're here."

By 4 p.m. over 3,300 tickets had been sold and with show times running through 10 p.m., that number was expected to quickly rise.

For some residents who said goodbye to their neighborhood theater a few months ago, they were happy to see another one take its place.

"We'll be coming back," said Cindy Toscano, who picked up her grandson after hearing about the special on Good Morning San Antonio. "I have a group of girls that we hang out and we go to the movies once a week so it'll be a really nice choice for us to come out here."

"What I noticed, first thing, they've got enough people at the concession stands so you don't have to wait and that's great because other places you go and you have to wait," added Joe Rodriguez.

The theater will start showing first run movies on Friday.

The 14 theaters can seat up to 2,700 people and six of the screens are equipped for 3D movies.

There is also one RPX theater which is Regal's Premier Experience theater with larger leather seats.
