Neighbors oppose planned Walmart

SAN ANTONIO -

A Walmart Supercenter is planned for an area in North San Antonio that is very close to Hardberger Park and nearby residents are not happy about it.

It would be built on the Southwest corner of Wurzbach Parkway and Blanco road and there are some people in the North Castle Hills neighborhood that are not to happy.

“Oh no, we’re not for that at all. There’s going to be so much traffic and it's been so calm lately,” said Bertha E. Garcia, a resident of the North Castle Hills neighborhood.

Hardberger Conservancy has sent flyers to neighborhoods telling them what they think the consequences of a Walmart would be.

Garcia said the petitions declare that "24 hours a day of truck traffic, crime and noise ... will not improve our neighborhood."

"We do not want it," she said.

The Supercenter store would be built on a 41-acre tract.

Right now, only 19 of the acres are zoned for commercial use, and in order to build the massive discount store, the other 22 acres would have to be rezoned.

According to the Conservancy, the land has still not been closed on -- although there are survey stakes in the ground and on the trees.

Some neighbors worry about the trees that would have to be removed to make room for the store.

“There are a couple of them that are right in the middle of the property and I am willing to bet they are going to get bulldozed, chopped down,” said John Mullen, another neighborhood resident.
