Officer injured in highway traffic stop
2 arrested on drunken driving, drug possession charges
Officer injured in highway traffic stop
A traffic stop turned dangerous early Friday morning when a suspected drunken driver hit a San Antonio police cruiser.
"The first suspect ... was stopped for the suspicion of DWI. Once he was stopped, they found the narcotics, and once they made the arrest on that case, you have another DWI suspect hit the officer from behind," Sgt. Chris Benavides said.
Officer Shawn King pulled over 25-year-old John Anthony Arroya on the westbound frontage road of Interstate 10 near Woodstone around 2:45 a.m.
Police said they found marijuana in Arroya’s car, and arrested him for drunken driving and drug possession.
King was still working on that arrest when 23-year-old Juan Lugo-Godines hit his patrol car.
Police said Lugo-Godines had several bottles of beer in his car, and he tried to flee the scene.
This is the second time Lugo-Godines has been arrested on drunken driving charges. He also faces charges for failure to stop and render aid and evading arrest.
Police said this kind of wreck is one of an officer’s worst nightmares.
"By nature, just by being on the highway, it's inherently dangerous to be out there. So our officers always in the back of their mind are cognizant of that and always have some type of fear factor that someone's going to come hit them from behind," Benavides said.
King went to an area hospital for neck and back pain.
He’s been released, but will be placed on light duty for now.
