Officers accused of covering up crash

SAN ANTONIO -

As many as seven San Antonio police officers are under investigation after they were accused of covering up a car crash involving a sergeant who was allegedly driving his patrol car drunk while off-duty.

Chief William McManus spoke about the investigation on Monday stating his zero tolerance policy extends to everyone, even his own officers. "We don't tolerate this and I think our actions are proving that," McManus said during the news conference.

McManus said the incident happened last Thursday when an off-duty sergeant who had apparently been drinking crashed his patrol car into a wall near Highway 281 and Josephine. The sergeant walked away from the crash and security guards at a nearby building called police.

A total of seven officers responded to the scene and according to McManus, six of them allegedly began to figure out a way to cover up the incident.

"There was an attempt to take the sergeant home, and there was also an attempt to remove what would be evidence from his vehicle," McManus said.

McManus said six members of the force, ranging from lieutenant to officer, have been placed on administrative duty.

The sergeant accused of drunk driving has been placed on administrative leave.

"My concern is the integrity and reputation of the police department and our officers will be held to the highest standards and this is unacceptable behavior," McManus said.

McManus did not release the name of the sergeant under investigation, but did say he was a 20-year veteran of the department.
