Old steel warehouse recycled into apartments
Peden Iron and Steel building reopens in Lone Star Neighborhood in Southtown
The old Peden Iron and Steel building is rich with stories of its place in history as a supplier for the steel used to build downtown San Antonio.
Built in 1913 and designed by Atlee Ayers, it’s been reborn from an industrial worksite into 67 loft apartments that feature old and new fixtures.
Concrete floors, steel fixtures, and original exposed brickwork were sealed and painted, but they remain amid state of the art apartment living.
Owner Dennis McDaniel says the ambiance was the result of wanting to retain the flavor of the industrial architecture, but there are some perks involved.
“You couldn't afford to build like they did then (with) the floors a foot thick. We have concrete columns with fluted capitals. It's just a beautiful building you couldn't reproduce,” he said.
New tenant Sean Calderon Barton also serves as the resident personal fitness trainer in the new building.
He says living without carpeting takes a little getting used to.
“The building is old, it's historical. It brings a really strong vibe that I really like. And I've always wanted a loft downtown," he said.
Many apartments have their own mini yard and boast of high ceilings.
The building has an outdoor lap pool, gated parking, fitness center and one special amenity new to San Antonio. The entire first floor will be the site of a Fruteria.
Chef Johnny Hernandez, who also owns La Gloria in the Pearl, is in the final stage of opening the traditional Mexican style fruit and juice stand.
“Fruteria by day, bontanero at night. So in the morning and afternoon it will be a traditional Mexican fruteria with great breakfast and lunch, in the even it's a botanero,” he said.
The evening fare will include Mexican style small plates and infused tequilas and other cocktails.
About half of the units are leased already. The restaurant will open in mid November.
The owners have also commissioned a huge beacon for the rooftop.
The art installation is a 22-foot water tower that will feature animated, illuminated stained glass that should be visible throughout the Lone Star Neighborhood.
